What is a favicon? The name refers to an icon file (.ico), usually named favicon.ico, which is displayed on the favorites menu in web browsers when you create a shortcut to a web page. When you use a Favicon the first thing your visitor notices is your chosen logo displayed next to your URL in the browser’s address bar, instead of the standard icon wherever the shortcut to their site appears. I think that we can draw a conclusion that having a favicon on your website allows your visitors to quickly identify your site in their favorite folder among all other bookmarked sites. Here is how a site looks with a favicon and without one in the Opera Browser:

If you are interested in adding a favicon to your Wordpress template, here is all you have to do:

1. Choose any non-copyrighted image you like.
2. Visit this great website for tools to create your favicon.
3. Upload your image and click on “Generate Favicon”.
4. If you are happy how your favicon looks in the preview, download it to your hard drive.
5. Upload your favicon to your webhost.
6. Edit the header in your template (between and ) to add the following line:
. Save the file.
If this doesn’t work you might need to specify the full path to your favicon.ico file something like this “http://www.yoursite.com/folder1/folder2/favicon2.ico”.
